Shrimp Farming Aerator

A shrimp farming aerator is a piece of equipment that is used to provide dissolved oxygen to pond water to promote the growth of freshwater shrimp. The aerator is usually controlled from the farm by turning on and off as needed. Although aerators are designed to run at least 24 hours a day, farmers often turn them off during the day when the pond is not in use.

Aeration is a very important aspect of shrimp aquaculture. The amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is necessary for the physiological processes of the shrimp. Dissolved oxygen levels in a pond are frequently measured as a means of determining aeration effectiveness. However, it is not always easy to determine the efficiency of an aerator. In particular, the aerator's horsepower is not measured in pounds per hour, but instead in horsepower per hectare.

The amount of energy that is used for aeration will vary depending on several factors. These include in-situ water conditions, the biomass of the shrimp, and the respiration requirements of the shrimp. It is possible to calculate the energy used for aeration using the equations listed below.

One of the most popular forms of mechanical aeration in shrimp ponds is floating electric aerators. This type of aerator is a common design in most countries. They are typically driven by a 2- to 5-hp electric motor.

Another type of mechanical aerator is a propeller-aspirator-pump (PAP) aerator, which is driven by a two-pole motor. PAPs are designed to rotate at 3,600 rpm. Therefore, they do not transfer as much oxygen as a four-pole motor, but they are more efficient than other types of aerators.

During the early stages of the grow-out phase, the proportion of installed aerator capacity in use is often more than is needed. However, this should be addressed as the aeration capacity will be required to increase as the biomass of the shrimp increases.

The standard deviation of the aerator capacity to the shrimp yield ratio was 88 kg/hp. However, the average aerator-to-shrimp yield ratio was 312 kg/hp. As a result, most farms were taking advantage of the largest capacity aerators during the earliest stages of their crop.

Several studies have been conducted on aeration energy use in shrimp farming. Some studies estimate the energy used for aeration to be as high as 15 GJ/t shrimp. Others indicate that the energy consumed per tonne of shrimp is much lower. For example, Mohanty (2001) reports an average energy use of 21.8 GJ/t. Other estimates range from 11.4 to 41.6 GJ/t.

Aeration efficiency can be improved by rethinking the design of farm-made aerators. For instance, a direct drive of intelligent frequency conversion can significantly reduce the decelerator structure of traditional aeration machines. Also, it is suggested that long-arm aerators be replaced with factory-fabricated aerators. This would decrease energy use at farms, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by around 460,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year.

If manufacturers of aerators in Asia redesign their equipment, they could reduce the energy used for aeration. In addition, farmers could monitor aerator performance from the comfort of their own homes.
