Aquaculture Paddle Wheel Aerator

A paddle wheel aerator is an effective device for distributing oxygenated water throughout an aquaculture pond. In particular, it can be used to circulate water and algae culture within raceway ponds. Its advantages include low operating costs and minimal electricity consumption.

The paddle wheel aerator is a device that consists of a large rotating drum or cylinder, a shaft mounted on the cylinder, and several broad metal flaps called paddles. These paddles are attached in an alternating pattern to the drum. Each rotation of the paddles creates an azimuthal water circulation around the shaft.

Paddle-wheel aerators are widely used for shrimp cultivation in Southeast Asia. They are generally used in the dry season. While they have been shown to be relatively energy efficient, they are less effective than designed aerators.

The aeration performance of paddle wheel aerators was studied in an intensive shrimp growout pond with a rectangular shape. Several variables were used in the study. Measurements were taken at two different grid points. Using sequential raw data, average and variance were calculated for the velocity field at shallow and deep z values.

The velocity field was found to be a fairly accurate predictor of aeration performance. However, it could not be used to accurately measure the induced vertical circulation. For this reason, an additional measurement will be conducted in the future.

Water current measurements were made at the aerator's downstream end. This measurement was obtained using an oval current meter. Scaled by 10 mm, the meter was able to detect a water current of up to two mm. With a minimum inflow velocity of 0.3 mm, the meter could distinguish a subtle stream of water that may be induced at a considerable distance from the aerator.

The oval meter is also able to determine normal water velocity components. This is achieved by amplification of analog voltage outputs. Depending on the flow current, galvanic DO sensors can be used to measure the amount of oxygen that is consumed by the membrane. Optical DO sensors require no minimum inflow velocity.

Paddle-wheel aerators work at high speeds. The aerator is powered by an electric motor or a combustion engine. The aerator is typically anchored at the edge of the pond, which means that it consumes energy in the tractor or drive train. Therefore, its running costs are ten times that of a centrifugal water stirrer.

As a result, they are not considered an attractive option for aeration. Nevertheless, they can be used in a wide variety of applications. One of the most common uses for paddle wheels is to aerate an entire pond. When installed on a long bank of a rectangular pond, a paddle wheel can help to keep the entire pond aerated.

Another advantage of paddle-wheel aerators is that they are designed for use in a shallow pond. Hence, they can generate a large water circulation at the surface. By circulating the water, they can release air bubbles into the water, which mixes oxygen in the air with the water.
